Self-catering in The Drakensberg

Holiday makers would like to enjoy the same, if not better, facilities that they have at home. The Central Drakensberg offers 6 to 8 sleeper houses that are luxuriously furnished and equipped with modern appliances.

These venues ensure that the discerning visitor is comfortable and relaxed. We can also cater for couples wanting a getaway or a honeymoon destination. Rates vary and specials are available during off peak seasons.

Summer in the Berg means, al fresco dining under starlit skies, braais (barbeques), walks and hikes next to fast flowing mountain streams, horse riding, mountain biking, taking a canopy tour and finding waterfalls in indigenous forests.

Of course, summer in the ‘berg is also about drinking milk shakes on patios facing majestic mountains, children splashing in pools and having quality family time!.

Indigenous gardening in The Berg

Springtime! I have some wonderful neighbours in Cathkin Estates and one friend in particular has been and is still is, offering incredible energy, knowledge and creativity in helping me refurbish and extend the indigenous garden at Zebra Crossing, a 4star self-catering house. We have a couple of local nurseries who are supplying huge amounts of compost and a variety of trees, shrubs and ground covers. This will be an on-going project and it is so exciting to see it taking shape. The Dombeya Rotunifolia which is the wild pear is flowering, clusters of white flowers, the paperback thorns are shooting green leaves, the pelargoniums are beautifull mixed with watsonias and other small shrubs. The wild hares took a liking to the pink flowering dietes and I am hoping they will not like the new Arctosis.Jill & Alpheus working in Zebra Crossing's garden

Snow & more Snow

Guests at Cathedral Peak Hotel in the Central Berg woke up to a white world this morning, 26 July 2011. Thick snow covered the gardens and right up the Little Berg to the very high mountain peaks.  I know of a family who heard that there was a good chance of a snow fall and they asked me to book them into the hotel last night so that their children would be able to play in the snow if it fell.

Lawn tables and snowy peaks They were not disappointed!

Snowbound?

While the temperatures plummet and we look out onto snow covered mountains, we are so very grateful to sip hot chocolate or a frothy cappuccino in front of a roaring log fire. This evening we look forward to a meal which will include butternut and sweet potato soup and a glass of  Log fire in a self-catering chalet in Cathkin EstatesLog fire and cabernet sauvignoncabernet sauvignon!
