The Stables Wine Estate
DescriptionIn the old horse paddocks, where magnificent thoroughbred horses once graced the pastures in their majesty, is where The Stables Wine Estate's vineyards have been carefully situated. Stretching across 3ha of a gentle North-facing slope is where the pioneering vineyard for the first wine estate in KZN, has been established. Planted in September 2005, the first block consists of about 6000 vines, and a selection of varietals which where specially selected to suit the variable weather experienced in Nottingham Road. The relatively cool growing season is expected to ripen the grapes evenly, retaining a level of acidity that will contribute to the display of dry fruity flavours in the red and white wines produced by
The current range of varietals in the vineyard are varied and consist of Shiraz, Pinotage, Chardonnay, Nouvell, Viognier and Weisser Riesling, all of which have adapted well to the climate and are thriving. During the next two years the vineyards of The Stables estate will be extended, possibly with the introduction of some new varietals. An additional 3ha of arable land has been selected to introduce more vines.
The soils in the vineyard and the surrounding areas, are defined as Hutton and Red-Oak leaf type. The soil contained a naturally high acidity level, which was neutralised during the preparation of the land before planting. The topsoil consists of a finely textured structure approximately 20-25cm deep, while the sub soils consist of 25-30% clay content and are homogenous for the full rooting depth. The main advantages of these soils are that they are extremely well drained, aiding in the drainage of excess water after rainfall.
The vineyards are nurtured, to ensure the best quality grapes. Care is taken to nourish the ground and the vines. This is displayed in every grape harvested to make wine. Ultimately, the heart, soul and individuality of every great wine evolves from the soil and the vines.
The first harvest season from The Stables vineyards is expected in 2008. This will be the estate's first vintage of estate wines, made from grapes from our own vineyards. It will be a great milestone in building the KZN winelands and to push through into a new era of superb wines.
In September 2006, The Stables Wine Estate officially took control of the vineyards in the Greytown area. We now manage and maintain roughly about 20ha of vines, which consist of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. We will be harvesting from these vines in the 2007 harvest season and will be producing our KwaZulu-Natal range of wines from these grapes.
In October 2006 we added 1ha of Pinot Noir to the existing vineyards on the estate in Nottingham Road.
